  • Ballard, JG – Crash. i read it on a roadtrip; you should not. instruction manual sex & heavy cars & violence & personal isolation #books
  • Akutagawa, Ryunosuke – Rashomon & Other Stories. chunky prose that feels translated. stark venomous shorts. standout: “in a grove” #books
  • Ballard, JG – War Fever. some effective shortstories, some gimmicky ones. standout: “Report on an Unidentified Space Station” #books
  • Barker, Clive – The Thief of Always. tighter structured than coraline but not as visceral. #books
  • Beagle, Peter S – A Fine and Private Place. quiet book in which not much happens. wellobserved, poignant, & welldrawn. a scout. #books
  • Black, Holly – Tithe. brilliant first sentence, constant obstacles & a quick read. her current books far outstrip this, though. #books
  • Black, Holly – White Cat. frothing fan of cassel & his hurting ways. watch him make doomed decisions. also: scams. #books
  • Black, Holly – Ironside. i’m a sucker for faerie politics and angst and running around. #books
  • Black, Holly – Valiant. my favorite of this series. drugs & homeless kids & fairies (& a troll). more running around. #books
  • Brecht, Bertold – The Threepenny Opera. first: the beggar’s guild. & amazing music, once weill gets to it. #books
  • @hollyblack they say it takes something like ten years to master a craft, & judging by the difference between tithe & white cat, that’s true
  • @hollyblack & anyhow i enjoyed tithe too, so no sad points for it–i read it in one sitting. but white cat is ++good, and blows the rest out

  • Collins, Billy – Sailing Alone Around the Room. sweaterweather fresh air and teatime poetry. #books
  • Crais, Robert – The Monkey’s Raincoat. quick and smooth, arresting characters; renewed noir, which means a fresh, human protagonist. #book
  • de Saint-Exupéry, Antoine – Wind, Sand and Stars. i love every part of this book. i want a biplane. best storm description i’ve read. #book
  • Delany, Samuel R – Dhalgren. hazy odd future that feels like the sixties. sex, philosophy, loops of interaction, but readable & clear #books
  • Disch, Thomas – Camp Concentration. claustrophobic, insideout feeling. reminded me of the camp in v for vendetta. smart selfdestruct #books
  • Dorfman, Ariel – Desert Memories. initially drew me to chile. stories of miners & their now obsolete way of life. #books

  • Ellison, Harlan – Dangerous Visions. best anthology in sf, designed to push publisher censorship. not a single bum story. leiber ftw #books
  • Forster, EM – Aspects of the Novel. aspirational analysis, a peptalk on what’s possible. and again: books are about people. #books
  • Fraser, George MacDonald – Flashman. q: how offensive can we make this protagonist? a: rather quite, pip pip. #books
  • Freeman, Grace Beachum – Midnight to Dawn. tranquil, nature loving poetry; gardens, time, & loss. standout: boy watching a mushroom. #books
  • Gaiman, Neil – M is for Magic. shortstories not necessarily for kids, collected. standout: how to talk to girls at parties. #books
  • today explained in spanish: philosophy of minimalist rock & roll, various etymological influences of english, & why american girls are loud.
  • Gaiman, Neil; Zulli, Michael – The Last Temptation. the first of gaiman’s comics i haven’t really liked. mopping bradbury’s gravy. #books

  • Garner, Alan – The Owl Service. an entirely foreign fantasy. legends are coming & they don’t care for you. more welsh than s. cooper #books
